What is Interior Design?

Interior Design is to provide a design solution that improves the function and health of a space.  An interior designer is licensed professional and qualified by the education, experience, and examination.  A interior designer works to meet the needs and wants to ensure a safe and appealing space.  By meeting ADA (Americans with Disabilities ACT) standards and through universal design the building may be more accessible for people of all disabilities. Interior Design means to be responsible to not only providing creativity to a room but provide a healthy environment as well, this may be accomplished by using sustainable materials.  In using sustainable materials it improves indoor air quality and lasts longer reducing waste.  An interior designer may also be responsible for the floor plan layout within a buildings shell, he/she accomplishes this through adjacency matrix, bubble diagrams, and schematic space planning.
An interior designer may perform some tasks that include decorating a space, however he/she is not considered a decorator.

  • Confirmation that preliminary space plans and design concepts are safe, functional, aesthetically appropriate, and meet all public health, safety and welfare requirements, including code, accessibility, environmental, and sustainability guidelines
  • Preparation of construction documents, consisting of plans, elevations, details and specifications, to illustrate non-structural and/or non-seismic partition layouts; power and communications locations; reflected ceiling plans and lighting designs; materials and finishes; and furniture layouts
