Universal Design

Universal Design is an important part in the interior design profession today. With the growing technology of universal design products improvements are always being made to achieve accessibility to all people no matter their limitations.  Universal design is most important to the interior design profession in helping to provide accessibility and ensure safety in both residential and commercial buildings.
What is universal design?
“The term "universal design" is often applied in different ways but broadly refers to the concept that ideally all design (products, technologies and the built environment) should serve the broadest range of people, regardless of levels of ability or mobility, age, gender or physical stature without the need for adaptation or specialized design. It is not a design style but rather an orientation to design, focusing on the end-user.”
Why is Universal Design Important?
Universal design not only improves the accessibility of the home, but the safety of the home.  An age in place home gives accessibility to all generations.  Universal Design also takes into account people with all different types of physical limitations.

How You Can Improve Your Home With Universal Design
  • provide door clearance space of at least 32”
  • wider aisle ways
  • grab bars around showers and toilets
  • microwave placed at eye level
  • refrigerator with pull out shelving
  • choosing flooring that is slip resistant and even (avoid carpet or uneven brick)
  • provide storage and shelving at a lower, comfortable height
  • place electrical outlet higher above floor to limit bending over.
  • install loop or louver door handles
